General Plot The plot of the anime revolves around Yugi, a meak boy who takes up a deck of monster cards from his grandfather and is swept into the world of duel monsters. He is followed by his faithful friends on his journies to become a master duelist and stop the plans of those who would use the cards to their malign advantage. The Millenium Puzzle, the pyramid, around his neck allows him to communicate with the spirit trapped within the item and grants him a partner when dueling.

| Yugi Mutou
The protaganist of the story, Yugi is a mild-mannered youth who finds himself fascinated by his grandfather's deck of monster cards. Inadvertently he is dragged into a world of dark intentions and wonderful monsters.

| Yami
The spirit trapped within the Millenium Puzzle who holds no memory of his past life, he often arises to assist Yugi in the card battles. His control over their body appears to increase their physical stature to an older teenager.

| Katsuya Jonouchi (Joey Wheeler)
The best friend of Yugi, he was a brash thug who changed his ways at seeing Yugi's kindness. A less proficient card player, he nonetheless remains a valuable friend to the young champion.

| Anzu Mazaki (Téa Gardner)
A childhood friend of Yugi, she supports the other card players as they fight their battles. Her obvious affection for Yami and her fondness for Yugi show something more than just friendship, however.

| Hiroto Honda (Tristan Taylor)
The friend of Katsuya (Joey), he also was changed by Yugi's kind demeanor and now plays the supportive role along side Anzu (Téa).

| Seto Kaiba
Originally an enemy and harsh rival to Yugi, he slowly changes as the series progresses to become an ally. A gamer with great skill with the Blue Eyes White Dragon cards, he controls Kaiba Corporation, the largest gaming company in the world.
