General Plot
The anime centers around the life of Kenshin Himura, a swordsman with a bloody past who seeks only to redeem himself through protecting the weak with his reverse sword. He makes the acquaintance of Kaoru Kamiya, a master of the local defense dojo, and there inadvertently gathers around a group of odd but true friends who help him retain the peace of the Meiji Era.

| Kenshin Himura
Formerly the Battousai, or man slayer, Kenshin now happily leaves a life without bloodshed. Unfortunately, his skills are often needed in the defense of the weak and helpless.

| Kaoru Kamiya
Master of the local dojo and an expert in defensive sword fighting, Kaoru keeps a strict watch over the former samurai. She remains his stabilizing force as matters become too heavy a burden for him alone to carry.

| Yahiko Myojin
An orphaned youth who wanders his way into the lives of the dojo's inhabitants, he proves his worth several times with his assistance to Kenshin and Kaoru. His affection for Kaoru resembles a true bond of brother and sister.

| Sanosuke Sagara
A mercenary who wields a massive sword, he turns his strength to good use through Kenshin's influence. He often finds himself in trouble when complaining about Kaoru's horrible cooking.

| Megumi Takani
A doctor who almost committed suicide rather than help a poppy traffiker, she is led back to life by Kenshin. Now she practices her medicine in the town, offering assistance to the often wounded fighters when needed. Her affection towards the former samurai eventually turns toward the fighter-for-hire, Sanosoku, much to the man's regret as she is often times bossy.
